The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund has announced the findings
of its consultation exercise and plans for the way forward. The
strategic report, 'Our findings, Our future' was launched on 13 July
2006, by the Fund's Chief Executive, Dr Astrid Honeyman.
The Fund will focus on three main grant streams:
Palliative Care Initiative:
The Fund will spend up to £10 million on the Palliative Care
Initiative over the next five years to promote the scale up of
palliative care and its integration into international donor health
policies. The Fund's Palliative Care Initiative was launched in 2001
and works in nine sub- Saharan countries and to date has spent over £2
million.
Young Refugee and Asylum Seekers - Focus on Potential:
The Fund will spend up to £10 million on the Young Refugee and Asylum
Seekers programme to raise awareness and highlight the needs and
issues of this group of young people. Refugee and Asylum Seekers have
been part of the Fund's thematic criteria since the first grants round
in 1999. Awards have been made to a variety of organisations, from
large national bodies to smaller local refugee organisations,
totalling £7.3 million.
Partnership Fund:
The Fund will allocate up to £5 million to the Partnership Fund to
follow up and add leverage to its previous UK and international
investments. In the UK, this will be in the areas of mental health,
penal affairs and learning disabilities, and internationally in the
areas of landmines and explosive remnants of war. The Fund has
supported these causes for a number of years and is pleased to
continue investing in the significant gains already achieved in these
areas.

Key facts:
The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, established on 4 September
1997 with £20 million in donations from the public, is an independent
charity. £45 million has been raised from donated products, including
£38m from the "Candle in the Wind" single, and £35 million raised from
licensed products and related activities.
The Fund's mission remains to help change the lives of some of the
most neglected, marginalised people in the UK and in the poorest
countries and regions overseas. Deriving inspiration from the work of
Diana, Princess of Wales, the Fund gives priority to groups and causes
that otherwise find it difficult to obtain recognition. Mindful of the
Princess's willingness to speak out courageously and take risks, the
Fund is committed to awareness raising and advocacy as well as its
practical work. To date, the Fund has committed over £68 million to
more than 350 organisations in the UK and abroad.
The Directors of the Fund have decided that in order to leave the best
possible legacy of humanitarian work in the name of the Diana, the
Princess of Wales, the Fund should continue making new grants from its
capital reserves for at least five years from 2007. The total life of
the Fund will be between five to nine years from 2006, subject to
periodic review.
