Londoners who have an idea for a community project can apply for a
small grant of around £1,500 from the Community Champions Fund.
The Community Champions Fund is for ordinary people who have a good
idea for improving their community. Individuals can apply for a grant
of a maximum of £2,000 to help turn their idea into reality.
Over the past five years, hundreds of Londoners have received
Community Champions grants. They have used the money to run grassroots
projects all over London.
Past projects have included after-school clubs, neighbourhood
newsletters, a Farsi-speaking women's volleyball team, recycling
projects, self-help groups, dance classes, puppet-making classes, and
youth activities - to name just a few.
The Community Champions Fund is delivered by the Scarman Trust, a
national charity dedicated to encouraging grassroots community
activism.
This year, it's easier than ever to apply for a Community Champions
grant.
There are application deadlines every month - in August, September,
October, November and December 2006.
Application packs can be downloaded from the Scarman Trust's website
at http://www.thescarmantrust.org/london
Alternatively, the Trust can be contacted on 020 7713 9306.
The Scarman Trust was established following Lord Scarman's inquiry
into the 1981 inner city riots. Its aim is to promote and enable
creative citizenship - tapping into people's ideas, skills and
commitment to build healthy communities for all.
The Community Champions Fund is a Department for Education and Skills
(DfES) initiative which has the twin aims of fostering the personal
development of community activists, while supporting their efforts to
do something positive for their community. There are now nearly 2,000
Community Champions across London. The Scarman Trust delivers the
Community Champions Fund on behalf of DfES.
