Gender analysis: the key to better services and enhancing social
inclusion?
London 18th January 2007
This seminar organised jointly by the LGiU and Oxfam, will demonstrate
how attention to the different life chances of women and men, and the
technique of gender analysis, can make a real difference in tackling
poverty and social inclusion.
Too many programmes have failed to take gender on board and the
results have limited progress on achieving real outcomes. The 2006
Equalities Act and new Public Sector Duties on disability and gender
provide impetus for a new look at how services could be improved to
tackle these issues more effectively. The White Paper has stated that
a new duty will be placed on local authorities to involve and engage
their communities. This seminar will look at how an understanding of
gender issues is crucial to the success of this agenda.
This seminar draws on the lessons of Oxfam's UK poverty programme and
particularly their work on gender and regeneration. It aims to provide
practical examples of how policies can be made more gender sensitive.
Case studies on gender, budgeting, community participation
methodologies paying attention to gender, race and age, and service
delivery for lone parents, spell out in practice how gender analysis
can identify and iron out discrimination and clear the way for more
effective actions and outcomes.
