Northern Rock Foundation new funding programmes - North East and
Cumbria
(item supplied by fit4funding)

Priorities include domestic violence and sexual violence.

Northern Rock Foundation has launched new funding programmes which
will run for the next five years. The Foundation will invest more than
£28 million in 2007 in grants to voluntary organisations and through
other activities to support its new priorities. The changes are the
result of a major review of its approach to tackling disadvantage and
improving quality of life in North East England and Cumbria. Projects
working with older people, the unemployed, homeless people and victims
of domestic violence are all set to benefit, as are high-profile
cultural developments. The Foundation is now one of the largest
charitable trusts in the UK, and the biggest with a specific regional
focus.

During 2005 and 2006 the Foundation reviewed its policies and
priorities, consulting nearly 1,000 people in the process. The funding
programmes announced today maintain the Foundation's interest in areas
such as economic regeneration, older people and cultural developments,
alongside new priorities including sexual violence and hate crimes.

As well as its grant programmes, the Foundation will offer training
and development support for the voluntary organisations, and
contribute to regional and national policy discussions. It also
intends to fund some large-scale initiatives focusing on particular
problems in depth, and will continue to offer loans as an alternative
means of supporting charitable activities.

Organisations seeking grants from the Foundation under its new
programmes can from today get guidance from its website or by
contacting its office. The Trustees will make their first grants under
the new programmes in early 2007.

The Foundation's new programmes are as follows:
* Money and Jobs - Helping disadvantaged people and communities to
increase their assets, income and economic activity.
* Independence and Choice - Giving people with mental health problems,
people with learning disabilities, older people and carers a choice of
excellent services that help them to become or remain independent.
* Strong and Healthy Communities - Strengthening people's well-being
through community and physical activities, improving local
environments and by helping them to get healthy, fresh food.
* Building Positive Lives - Helping people who lack self-confidence or
motivation, or who face discrimination, to have the individual support
they need to lead more positive and fulfilling lives.
* Safety and Justice - Reducing the incidence and impact of domestic
abuse, sexual violence, prostitution, child abuse and hate crimes, by
investing in better support for victims.
* Culture and Heritage - Inspiring, enjoyable and diverse culture
programmes and events that raise our region's profile and make it a
better place for everyone to live and enjoy life.
* Better Buildings - Investing in improved buildings for cultural
organisations and for voluntary and community groups.

The Foundation will fund properly constituted organisations carrying
out charitable activities that take place in North East England or
Cumbria, and which fall under one of its grant programmes.

Full information about eligibility and how to apply is available on
the Foundation's website.
