Special Initiative - Safeguarding Children's Rights
Deadline: 9 May 2007

Trust for London (TfL) and City Parochial Foundation (CPF) are
announcing a new special initiative to safeguard children and to
promote children's rights. The initiative will support work in the
community addressing the problem of faith-based child abuse linked to
a belief in spirit possession. African community groups brought this
to the attention of TfL and CPF as an issue of serious concern.

Most of the initiatives following from the Victoria Climbié Inquiry
are operating at inter-agency level. There has, however, been little
significant support for work at a local community level. At the same
time, there are a number of African community and church groups
attempting to address this complex and difficult problem with limited
or no financial resources. These groups are working competently and
sensitively, most with no paid staff. This funding initiative is
designed to help to develop and sustain the work of community groups,
and work which complements and enhances this work, in order to
contribute to the safety, quality of life and well-being of children
and to promote children's rights. Proposals are invited from community
and voluntary sector organisations working with African communities to
tackle faith-based child abuse. It is expected that much of the work
funded will be preventive, designed to foster an environment in which
child abuse cannot develop. A total of £450,000 will be available over
three years and will fund four or five projects.
