Akina Mama wa Afrika Invites you to a workshop on:
Strengthening the Capacity of African Women's Organisations to
Influence Policy on Gender-Based Violence
Dates: Wednesday 2nd July, 2008
Time: 9.30am - 4.30 pm
Venue: Unit 1B Leroy House, 436 Essex Road, London, N1 3QP
Background:
The invisibility of African women who are victims and survivors of
gender-based violence from research and public debate in the UK raises
serious concerns about how the justice system, health care providers
and other agencies respond to the needs of this client group. African
women's organisations, although very active at grassroot levels, also
suffer from the same lack of visibility and find it difficult to
promote their cause at policy-influencing and decision-making levels.
Strenghening the skills of African women's organisations in policy
analysis and policy change is key for organisations providing relief
to African women in order for them to become advocates on issues
relating to African women's emotional and physical well-being, and to
be able to engage in the development of strategies and responses to
violence against women. In order to bring about real changes in
attitudes and behaviours as they relate to gender-based violence,
Akina Mama wa Afrika believes that advocacy and lobbying of
decision-makers at local and national levels needs to become a
priority for African women's groups.
Aims of the Workshop:
Therefore, Akina Mama wa Afrika is organising a one day workshop which
seeks to:
1. Provide a space for African women to share their knowledge and
learning on issues surrounding gender-based violence within African
communities in the UK;
2. Enable African women and their organisations to develop a
deeper understanding of policy and decision-making at local and
central government levels;
3. Strengthen the capacity of African women's organisations to
gain access to, and engage with, policy-making circles at the local
and central government levels, especially on issues relating to
gender-based violence;
4. Support African women's organisations in developing policy and
advocacy campaigns on gender-based violence issues.
Target Audience: African women's organisations and women from African
Organisations
