Akina Mama wa Afrika
Invites you to a workshop on:
Domestic violence awareness for service providers
Dates: Friday 19th June, 2008
Time: 9.30am - 4.30 pm
Venue: Central London
Background
For many African women affected by, or at risk of, domestic violence
in
the UK, the challenges they face are not only related to the violence
they suffer. Their experiences are further compounded by their lack
of
information about services in the local area, their isolation
(especially those who have newly arrived the country), their fear of
authorities (worsened by the fact that their immigration status is
often
dependent on their husbands) and the fear that their children will be
taken into care if they report the violence. With regards specifically
to seeking support from mainstream service providers, they also fear
that they will encounter prejudice, discrimination, racism and lack of
understanding. Language barriers and different communication
approaches
also often act as obstacles in the relationship between African women
affected by violence and service providers. Because of the above,
many
African women prefer to seek support from African women's
organisations,
but as these are few, many women are left isolated. It is for this
reason that Akina Mama wa Afrika is now organising a one-day Domestic
Violence Awareness Workshop for mainstream Service Providers.
Aim:
The aim of the workshop is to enable mainstream Service Providers to
better understand the experiences and needs of this particular group
of
women, which will enhance their ability to respond to the challenges
this group faces and thus develop more appropriate services for them.
Trainer:
The workshop will be facilitated by Penny Parrot who has been involved
with policy development and programme delivery focusing on women's
issues for many years. She is currently an independent consultant
offering services in developing management systems, capacity building
activities, policy development and delivering family and women's based
services.
Target audience:
Organisations providing direct support to women affected by, or at
risk of, domestic violence, police officers, immigration officials who
encounter African women in their day to day work etc.
