Trusthouse Charitable Foundation - Themed Grant for Mental Health Projects in
the Criminal Justice System

In 2006, the Trustees decided to allot a three-year budget to a specific area of
work in which they have particular interest. The first of the Themed Grant
Programmes was for projects supporting older members of the community in rural
settings. 17 grants were given, totalling over £600,000.

Grants given under the themed grant programme may be one-off payments towards a
capital project, or given over one to three years for running costs for
established projects and over four years for new projects.

Mental Health Projects in the Criminal Justice System

>From July 2009, Trusthouse will accept applications from organisations running
projects which address mental health issues for prisoners and ex-offenders.
Grants will be awarded between 2009 and 2010, with final payments in 2013.

Trustees share the concerns of other organisations and individuals that there
are many prisoners and ex-offenders in the criminal justice system who would
stand a better chance of not re-offending if their mental health needs were
addressed.

They are seeking small projects working specifically with prisoners and
ex-offenders to improve their mental health and to help their integration into
the community.

Examples of projects Trustees are likely to be interested in include:
· therapy and counselling projects working inside and outside prisons
· creative arts projects designed to improve social and vocational skills, where
the majority of participants have mental health issues
· support for ex-offenders with ongoing mental health issues which will assist
with integration into the community and deter re-offending.

Trustees will be looking for projects which:
· are run by a registered charity or not-for-profit organisation with an annual
income under £1 million, which have been operating for a minimum of 3 years
· have a demonstrably successful track record in the field
· offer support to prisoners within prison and after release (either directly or
through partnerships with other organisations)
· can show how the work might be funded after the Trusthouse grant ends.

This is not an exhaustive list and they recommend that interested organisations
contact the Trusthouse office (details below) for an initial informal
discussion.

Please note that under this Themed Grant Programme they are only considering
projects where all clients are prisoners or ex-offenders; they are not seeking
projects which cater to anyone with mental health issues. However, such
projects may be eligible under our main grants scheme - please refer to the
Guidelines for Applicants on our website.

Trusthouse will not fund projects which are:
· delivering work required by statutory law - for example healthcare funded by a
Primary Care Trust.
· pilot projects (though developments of existing work e.g. working at
additional prisons will be eligible)
· delivered by organisations with no previous experience of working in prisons

The grants will fund:
· Revenue projects: up to three years' funding towards salaries, ongoing costs
including overheads, the purchase of materials, travel costs, recruiting and
training volunteers (but not professional training costs).
· Capital projects: one-off costs (for example fitting out or purchase of
premises, purchase of vehicles).

They will consider revenue project requests between £10,000 and £50,000 per
annum and up to £50,000 for capital projects.
