The School of Law at Queen Mary, University of London, successfully
established a legal advice centre in 2006 which is open to the general
public.

Through our Pink Business Scheme, we offer free commercial law advice
directly to charities, businesses, start-ups and social enterprises which
focus on bringing a benefit to the LGBT community.   As part of this we are
hosting a free training  and networking event  (including a free drinks
reception)  on Thursday 3rd November at 6.30pm  at Allen & Overy's offices
in Bishops Square, London E1 6AD.   Three lawyers from Allen & Overy will
give an overview of common issues encountered by charities, start ups and
social enterprises in commercial law. This will focus on three areas that
charities commonly need advice on: employment law, intellectual property law
and litigation.  The aim of the talk is to give anybody who works in a
charity or small business a chance to get an overview of common issues and
pitfalls so that they can spot legal issues and when they need advice. There
are still some spaces remaining so if you are interested in attending please

The Pink Business Scheme provided by the advice centre covers a range of
commercial areas.  This can be provided face to face or via email (depending
on the type of query).  Examples of the sorts of queries we deal with are:

* Employment advice where a client is reviewing its employee contracts
or having an issue with its employees.
* Intellectual property advice where a charity is unsure about
copyright laws or how to trademark their name and logo.
* Corporate advice where an organisation needs advice about whether it
should set up a company.
* Commercial litigation advice where help is needed following a
dispute with a provider.
* General commercial advice where an organisation needs help
understanding its contracts.

(Please note that charity law advice is not provided but we do advise
charities on other areas of law).

The legal advice centre also offers  more general legal advice on:
.         Intellectual property
.         Landlord and tenant disputes
.         Freehold and leasehold disputes
.         Employment issues
.         Consumer transactions
.         Private contracts
.         Cohabitation
.         Civil partnerships
.         Immigration
.         Discrimination
.         Homophobic attack
.         LGBT Hate crime
.         LGBT Police complaints
.         LGBT CRB checks and offences

The service is entirely free to any member of the public needing legal
advice in these areas.  Additionally, if a client has a legal issue which we
cannot advise on, we can signpost the client to an organisation that will be
able to assist them.

I have enclosed our promotional material for you to look at and would be
very grateful if you could display this on your notice boards, mention our
service in your newsletter or give out the leaflets so we can communicate to
the community that the service exists.
